Every newborn photo session I perform comes with the privilege of getting to know a beautiful growing family and hearing their stories. In the case of this adorable little guy, Mom and Dad literally crossed oceans to be together.

Mom is a North Carolina local, but Dad is from Ukraine. In the most modern of love stories, they met online and fell in love across the airwaves. They eventually realized that they had each found “the one” and then their precious baby boy came along.

I met up with this incredibly sweet couple two weeks after their little guy made his grand appearance so we could take his newborn portraits. As tiny as he is, he was surprisingly awake for much of his photo shoot! Those teeny little eyes were just so curious and he wanted to be part of the action. Still, we managed to get plenty of portraits of him being his sweet and mellow self.

For most of these newborn baby portraits, we went with a simple, timeless look and a neutral color palette that will never go out of style. It perfectly captures how quaint and kind this family is. I absolutely love the portraits where this little guy is cuddling with stuffed animals - he looks so cozy!

We did mix it up for a few of the portraits. This cute baby boy looks like the most precious little reindeer, and his portraits in blue are really capturing that fun-loving little boy energy. Mom and Dad can’t wait until their little guy is big enough to start playing baseball, so we brought in a bit of wishful thinking and created a little baseball portrait as well with a ball and a tiny bat.

If you have a new addition to your family on the way, I’d love to create their first professional portraits that you can treasure forever. Book your newborn photo session today with me at Heidi Houser Photography.

Your Top Questions About Family Photography Answered

Whether you have a family photo session in the books, or you’ve been tossing around the idea, now is the time to start planning to make it a smooth, stress-free, fun experience…and to get the best portraits, of course. Got questions about your family photo session? I’ve got answers! As the premier family photographer in Hickory, NC, I’ve been capturing families’ milestones and memories for many years, so I’m here to answer your questions and help you have the best family photo shoot.

Why Should You Get Professional Family Portraits?

I get it – when you’re a busy, exhausted parent, a family photo session sounds like so much work. Is it even worth it?

Truthfully, it doesn’t have to be as work-intensive as it sounds, and yes, it will be worth it – you’ll never regret having professional photos of your family. In the blink of an eye, your kids will be grown and all you’ll be able to see is a hint of that former child when you look at them. Family portraits, though, can freeze this moment in time so you can transport yourself back to these memories with just a glance at a photo. Every stage of your kids’ lives is a milestone worth remembering.

What Types of Family Photography Sessions Are There?

Each family photographer works differently, but I offer three types of family photo sessions: studio, on-location, and lifestyle. Studio sessions are your traditional family portraits: they’re typically posed and take place in my Hickory studio. An on-location photo shoot takes place at an outdoor venue – North Carolina is full of gorgeous landscapes so together, we’ll decide on the perfect setting. A lifestyle shoot takes place at your family’s home so your kids are in their comfort zone. On-location and lifestyle sessions will have some traditional poses, but we’ll put more focus on just photographing your family as you spend time together, interact with the environment, and make each other laugh.

How Should I Plan for My Family Photography Session?

Planning your family photo session is simpler than you might think, especially when you have an experienced photographer to guide you. Follow these top tips for planning for your session:

  1. Plan your family’s outfits. Don’t try to match everything; just aim for a coordinated color palette of shades that complement each other.
  2. Plan a backup outfit for each family member too because you never know when someone might spill something or have another wardrobe malfunction.
  3. Arrange the schedule for the day so that your kids’ eating, and napping schedules fit well with the session. Ideally, we want everyone to be well-fed and well-rested for your session.
  4. Tell your kids in advance that the session is coming up and get them excited about it. Let them know that it will be a fun family outing so they’re going into it with a positive attitude.
  5. Use your photographer’s expertise! I’ve been photographing families for years in the Hickory area, so I know all the best locations and strategies. If you have questions, just ask!
  6. Plan ahead for the details. Get your roots colored, nails done, brows waxed, and so on, but make sure you’re not doing them at the last minute.

How Can I Make the Most of My Family Photo Session?

There are plenty of ways to make your family photos as relaxed as possible while also getting amazing portraits. Follow these top tips:

  • Dress in layers. The weather can be unpredictable, and layers also give you the flexibility to add or remove layers as necessary if someone gets a stain.
  • Get creative with accessories like hats, scarves, and jewelry. Feel free to bring several options and I can give you advice on which ones will photograph the best.
  • This is the ultimate tip: have fun! I’m the one who’s on the clock, not you, so you can just relax and live in the moment, embracing the opportunity to have fun with your kids. Not only will you enjoy your experience more, but we’ll be able to get genuine smiles for your photos.

Hi again, ladies and gents!)

Let me stop for a second to tell you that I am seriously the luckiest photographer in the world. My clients are always so amazing to work with. That's true of my session with the Patel family, too!I met up with them (at the sunflower patch, in NC   and the weather was perfect for photo-taking. It was hot however no one complained, we knew the pictures would be worth it. While the weather was fine, it was the Patel family that made this shoot such a success. As you can see from the comments above and the photos below, this family is not only photogenic, but also a close-knit group who clearly love spending time together. They are lucky to have each other. Our session highlights are below!
